Kalla proposes joint polls for presidential and regional polls

JAKARTA (Antara, June 5, 2006): Vice President Jusuf Kalla Saturday expressed
the idea that the polls for presidential and regional leaders might be
carried out simultaneously in an integrated manner in order to cut financial costs
for its process.

"By carrying out the elections of the president, governors, mayors, and
regents at the same time, we work very efficiently ," said Kalla at a seminar on
seeking new format for more efficient and democratic regional elections in
Jakarta, Saturday.

Kalla said to make new election system possible, certain regions have to be
led by acting leaders until joint national and regional elections could be
carried out.

He said that under the proposed system, Indonesia will carry out twice
elections in every five years -- elections of executive and legislative posts.

"Schedule of the current regional elections depends on the completion of
governor, regent, or mayor's terms. Therefore, nearly everyday, there are regional
elections... It spends too much national energy," Kalla was quoted by Antara
news agency as saying.
