Indonesia Militant Jailed For 2002 Bali Bombings Freed

JAKARTA, Aug. 17 (AP)--An Islamic militant convicted in the 2002 Bali
bombings was released from prison Thursday, and 11 others linked to the
blasts got sentence reductions to mark Indonesia's Independence Day,
prison and justice ministry officials said.

It is an Indonesian tradition to cut jail terms on holidays, but the decision
was expected to anger countries that lost citizens in the twin nightclub
attacks that
killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists.

Family members of some of the victims said they were pained by the news.

Three militants serving time in East Kalimantan's capital of Balikpapan
received reductions of four months, paving the way for one, Puryanto, to walk free,
said
Edi, a prison official who uses a single name.

The militant, accused of helping shelter one of the key players in the
attacks,
left the jail on Thursday.

Nine other men imprisoned on Bali island had their sentences cut by four
months, said justice ministry official Djoko Bambang Untung.

Terrorists planning more attacks, says President

Devi Asmarani, Indonesia correspondent

IN JAKARTA - THE terrorist group led by Malaysian fugitive Noordin
Mohammad Top is still planning attacks in Indonesia, President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono said yesterday.

He warned the nation, during his annual state-of-the-union address to
Parliament, to remain alert although a fraction of the terrorist
network had been crippled after a major raid last year.

'In the course of 2006, we are thankful that our country has not
experienced a terrorist attack,' he said in the nationally televised
event to commemorate the country's Independence Day today.

'But this conducive situation should not make us careless,' he added.

Although a key bomb maker, Azahari Husin, was killed in the police
raid last year, the network remained alive, he said.

'The network of terrorists led by Noordin Mohammad Top, who has not
been arrested to this day, is still active. The security apparatus is
working hard to combat terrorism in our land,' he added.

Noordin and his late accomplice and compatriot Azahari are the alleged
masterminds behind a series of fatal bombings in the country since the
2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. The second attack in Bali
last year killed 22 people.

Last November, police raided a safe house where the two Malaysians and
their new recruits had been preparing for new attacks.

While Azahari and another militant in the house were killed in the
raid, Noordin managed to slip out of the house.

Weapons, explosive materials and videos found in the house and the
testimonies of several militants arrested since showed that the duo
had trained more suicide bombers who are still on the loose, police
said.

Dr Yudhoyono yesterday hailed the Indonesian police for their improved
performance in tackling the threat of terrorism.

The President also vowed to beef up and modernise arms supplies for
the Indonesian military and to boost security on the country's land
and sea border.

As part of continuing efforts to reform the defence force, the
government would raise salaries and benefits for soldiers and provide
them with adequate housing facilities, he said.
