Indonesia's Jan-May tourist arrivals 1.53 mln, down
8.77 pct yr-on-yr

JAKARTA, July 3 (XFN-ASIA) - Foreign tourists arrivals
during the five months to May dropped 8.77 pct
year-on-year to 1.53 mln, with Bali's Ngurah Rai
airport, the largest entry point for the period,
leading the fall, the Central Bureau of Statistics
said in a report.

In May alone, overall tourist arrivals through 13
entry-points across the country reached 332,445, up
slightly from 329,527 in the preceding month.

The report said during the five months, tourist
arrivals through Ngurah Rai reached 468,761, making it
the largest entry point during the period, though the
arrivals were lower than the 579,647 recorded a year
ago.

Meanwhile, tourist arrivals via Jakarta's
Soekarno-Hatta international airport reached 458,019,
up from 438,456 in the corresponding period a year
ago.

Batam, the industrial island near Singapore, came in
third spot with tourist arrivals of 409,32 during the
first five months, down from 462,548 a year earlier.

For the month of May alone, Bali was the biggest entry
point, although tourist arrivals during the month
dropped to 107,678 from 109,701 in April.

Bali's tourist industry is still trying to recover
from the impact of last October's suicide bomb attacks
there.

The report also said the average hotel occupancy rate
in 10 main tourist destinations declined to 44.19 pct
in April from 44.98 pct in March. Bali, however, saw a
pick-up in the occupancy rate to 45.48 pct from 40.24
pct in the previous month.

The report added that tourists' length of stay at
star-rated hotels across the country increased to 2.49
days in April from 2.29 in March.
