Indonesia's Astra H1 net profit down 38.5 pct

By Harry Suhartono

JAKARTA, July 28 (Reuters) - Indonesia's largest automotive
distributor, PT Astra International Tbk reported on Friday a 38.5
percent plunge in its first-half net profit as the industry was hit by
high inflation and interest rates.

Indonesia's automotive industry has been hit by a government decision
to sharply hike fuel prices last year, sending vehicles sales down 49
percent and motorbike sales down 26 percent in the first half compared
to the previous year period.

Astra said in a statement net profit in the first half decreased to
1.86 trillion rupiah ($208.9 million) while revenue fell 13.2 percent
to 25.9 trillion rupiah.

"Underlying profit from the automotive business fell by 55 percent to
0.8 trillion rupiah," the statement said.

Despite the sharp fall in industry volumes, Astra still performed
better than the overall market in the four-wheeler market with its
vehicles sales volumes falling only 39 percent.

The company, controlled by Singapore's Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd ,
said its motorbike sales volume plunged 29 percent during the first
half of 2006.

A slowdown in economic growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy also
hit Astra's other divisions.

"The non-automotive businesses, which comprise mainly financial
services, heavy equipment and agribusiness, produced an underlying
profit of one trillion rupiah, a 17 percent reduction over the first
half of 2005."

Inflation spiked to its highest level in around six years late last
year after a government decision to crank up fuel prices, prompting
the central bank to raise its reference interest rate to its highest
level in around three years.

The country's automotive sector, where most purchases are financed by
loans, was badly hurt by the sharp rise in interest rates.

Many in the industry say they expect the vehicle sector to wrap the
year with total sales of between 300,000-330,000, lower than a
historic high of 533,910 units in 2005 when interest rates were at a
record low.

Astra shares have fallen by 5.4 percent so far this year while the
Jakarta Composite Index <.JKSE> has soared 15 percent.

JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Indonesia's PT Astra International (ASII.JK) said
Friday its first half net profit fell 39% on year to IDR1.86 trillion,
from IDR3.03 trillion a year earlier, because of a drop in sales.

The company faced difficulties in the first half of 2006 as consumer
purchasing power continued to weaken after the government doubled fuel
prices, Astra President Director Michael Ruslim said in a statement.

He also attributed the weaker performance in the January to June
period to the high interest rate environment.

Revenue at the at country's largest automotive company by sales fell
13% to IDR25.91 trillion, from IDR29.84 trillion a year earlier,
because a drop in revenue contribution from its core automotive
business.

During the first half of the year, its car sales fell 39% on year to
83,302 units, while motorcycles sales dropped 29% to 913,547 units.

Astra commands 58% of the domestic car market and 52% of the motorcycle
market.

Analysts said the higher interest rate environment discouraged
consumer from buying vehicles through bank loans.

Astra's Ruslim said the company's non-automotive activities, mainly
financial services, heavy equipment distribution and plantations,
produced an underlying profit of IDR1 trillion, down 17% from a year
ago.

The lower profit from financial services and heavy equipment
distribution were partially compensated by an improvement in
performance from the plantation sector, he added.

Despite the weaker first-half performance, Ruslim said, "While we
continue to face challenging markets in the short term, we are
confident that prospects for the company in the medium term remain
attractive,".

Singapore's Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd. (C07.SG) owns 50.09% of Astra.

Indonesia's Gudang Garam H1 net profit halves

JAKARTA, July 28 (Reuters) - Indonesia's largest tobacco company, PT
Gudang Garam Tbk , reported a 49 percent drop in its first-half net
profit on Friday, reflecting weak consumer spending as the economy was
buffeted by high inflation.

Inflation spiked to its highest level in around six years late last
year after a government decision to crank up fuel prices, hammering
the purchasing power of many consumers.

Analysts say Gudang Garam's customers are more sensitive to price
hikes as they include many from lower income bracket.

Gudang Garam's net profit fell to 545 billion rupiah ($59.92 million)
from 1.07 trillion in the same period a year ago, while its revenue
rose 2.8 percent to 12.67 trillion rupiah.

Among its products, the firm makes traditional clove cigarettes, known
as kretek, whose familiar scent can be smelt in most corners of the
sprawling the country of 220 million.

The firm, the 12th largest company on the Jakarta bourse with a market
capitalisation of $1.95 billion, saw its operating profit tumble 32.4
percent to 1.14 trillion rupiah due to higher costs.

One of its key rivals, PT Handaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk , has been
targeting young urban smokers with stable income and its earnings have
been less sensitive to price changes.

Foreign companies have been attracted to Indonesia's tobacco market
and Philip Morris International, the tobacco arm of Altria Group ,
controls nearly 100 percent of Sampoerna.

The finance ministry expects cigarette firms in Indonesia to produce
220 billion sticks this year, unchanged from last year but well below
a peak of 239 billion in 2000 before Jakarta stepped up moves to raise
tax revenue on tobacco.

Indonesia's Bakrie Brothers Jan-May sales 1.68 trln rupiah vs 855 bln

JAKARTA, July 28 (XFN-ASIA) - Diversified group PT Bakrie Brothers
said sales in the five months to May rose 97 pct to 1.68 trln rupiah
from 855 bln a year earlier driven by a significant rise in revenue
from its infrastructure units.

"After posting an unprecedented 352 bln rupiah revenue in April,
Bakrie Brothers broke the record with a 592 bln indicative revenue in
May, or a surge of 157 pct from 230 bln in May last year," the company
said in a statement.

The company said most divisions recorded triple-digit growth in the
five months to May.

The infrastructure division posted sales of 461 bln rupiah in May
compared to 147 bln in the same month last year and 223 bln in April.
In the first five months, the infrastructure units recorded sales of
1.05 trln rupiah compared to 450 bln a year earlier, it said.

Plantation unit sales, including those of Bakrie Sumatra Plantation,
rose to 65 bln rupiah in May compared to 54 bln in May last year and
60 bln a month earlier. In the five months to May, plantation unit
sales rose 28 pct to 351 bln rupiah from 273 bln during the same
period last year.

Its telecom unit, Bakrie Telecom, recorded sales of 66 bln rupiah in
May compared to 29 bln in May last year and 60 bln in April. In the
first five months, the telecom unit recorded sales of 282 bln rupiah
compared to 132 bln a year earlier.

The sales increases were boosted by Bakrie Telecom's burgeoning
subscriber base, which was approaching 1 mln at end-May, as well as
the launching of CDMA in several cities in West Java and Banten
provinces, the company said.

For the five-month period, the infrastructure divisions contributed 62
pct to total company sales while plantations and telecoms contributed
21pct and 17 respectively, it added.

Indonesia Antam's H1 sales revenue up 56 pct

JAKARTA, July 28 (Reuters) - Indonesian state-run mining firm PT Aneka
Tambang Tbk said on Friday its revenue rose 56 percent in the first
half of 2006 on higher sales and an increase in prices of base metals.

Antam's revenue in the first six months of 2006 rose to 2.05 trillion
rupiah ($225.4 million) from 1.31 trillion rupiah in the same period
last year.

"The increase in revenue was in line with the commissioning of the
third smelter FeNi III and the start of Antam's new nickel mine,
Marnopo," the company said on Friday.

Antam's ferro-nickel output, a raw material for stainless steel, more
than doubled to 6,859 tonnes in the first half of this year, from
2,730 tonnes in the same period 2005.

But the company said full-year ferro-nickel output may fall to between
13,000-16,000 tonnes this year because of a temporary shutdown of the
third smelter after a leak in its metal tap hole early this month.

The company had earlier lowered its production target this year to
19,000 tonnes of ferro-nickel from 20,000 tonnes due to delays in
starting up the third smelter.

Ferronickel sales more than doubled to 6,329 tonnes from 2,305 tonnes
in the same period of 2005, fetching an average price of $7.54 per
pound.

Antam's gold output in the first half of 2006 dropped by 20 percent to
1,280 kg, from 1,596 kg in the same period in 2005 due to the
redesigning of its Pongkor gold mine in West Java. But gold prices
rose by 38 percent to $590.48 per troy ounce, compared to $427.38 per
troy ounce in first half of 2005.

Antam, however, raised its gold output target to 2,500 a kg for 2006,
from 2,300 kg due to the successful redesigning of its gold mine.

In line with falling output, gold sales fell by 37 percent to 1,178
kg, from 1,830 kg in the first half of 2005.

The Indonesian government owns 65 percent of Antam.
