Indonesia to Launch First Domestic Satellite

By Rieka Rahadiana

Jakarta: The first micro satellite made by Indonesia will be launched in
August.

The satellite has been named Lapan-Tubsat, is made by the National Space &
Aviation Agency (Lapan) in cooperation with the Technological Institute of
Bandung and PT Dirgantara Indonesia, and will be launched in India.

The plan for launching the satellite was announced by Agus Nuryanto, Deputy
of Aerial Technology at Lapan, during a teleconference with Minister of Defense
Juwono Sudarsono, from Biak yesterday (28/6).

Agus went on to say Lapan also plans to launch a second satellite, which will
function for maritime security.

However, the launch depends on the government.

The satellite’s use is for surveillance.

“It can be utilized for collecting weather data and sea conditions,” said
Agus.

In addition, the satellite can be used for taking pictures of ships.

This small satellite will pass over Indonesia four times a day, twice in the
afternoon and twice at night.
