Indonesian prosecutors seek 20-year sentence for suspected
Islamic militant
JAKARTA, November 1 (AP) - State prosecutors on Wednesday
demanded a 20-year jail sentence for a suspected Islamic
militant accused of possessing illegal firearms and
involvement with al-Qaida-linked terrorists.
Joko Wibowo, alias Abu Sayaf, allegedly owned a
semiautomatic handgun that was used by a member of the
regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah for a bank robbery
in Central Java province, chief prosecutor Farda Nawawi told
the Semarang District Court.
He also was accused of lending a gun to Subur Sugiarto --
who faces charges of recruiting terrorists and helping plan
last year's suicide attacks on Bali island that killed 20
people -- before his arrest last January, the prosecutor
said.
"We ask the court to sentence the defendant to 20 years in
jail," he said, adding that the suspected Islamic militant
violated both the country's anti-terror law and legislation
banning possession of firearms.
Wibowo's supporters chanted "Allahu akbar" or "God is great"
as Nawawi read out the demand.
The hearing was adjourned until Nov. 15 to give Wibowo and
his lawyers time to respond.
Jemaah Islamiyah has carried out a string of terrorist
attacks in Indonesia in recent years, including the 2002
attacks on Bali that killed 202 mostly foreign tourists, and
car bombings in the capital Jakarta in 2003 and 2004 that
together killed at least 20.
Prosecutors last month sought life in prison for Sugiarto,
who is also an alleged key aide of Noordin Top, one of
Jemaah Islamiyah's top leaders.
