Australian and Indonesian navies conduct joint training

CASSOWARY CANBERRA, November 13 (AAP) - The Australian and
Indonesian navies will conduct joint exercises over the next
week to improve their ability to operate in the Timor Sea.

Exercise Cassowary will involve the Australian patrol boats
HMAS Albany and Dubbo and the Indonesian vessels KRI Layang
and Kakap, testing their skills in surveillance and maritime
operations.

The exercise will finish in Kupang, Indonesia, at the end of
the week.

The exercise was launched in Darwin today by Australian
Maritime Commander, Rear Admiral Davyd Thomas, and
Indonesia's Eastern Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Moekhas
Sidik.

"Training in exercises such as Cassowary is essential for
our people to further develop our surveillance skills and to
maintain proficiency across a range of core mariner skills,"
Admiral Thomas said in a statement.

Cassowary is one of a number of naval exercises under way
this month.

Australian and New Zealand ships and aircraft will test
their anti-submarine warfare skills against two Australian
Collins submarines off the West Australian cost over the
next two weeks.

The RAN will conduct sea assessment of principal warfare
officer trainees in the same area between November 27 and
December 1.

During both exercise periods, there'll be increased air
activity in the WA Exercise Area airspace, which extends 80
nautical miles west of Rottnest Island and north and south
between Lancelin and Geographe Bay.
