S'pore leader apologises to Malaysia for race comments
SINGAPORE, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of
modern Singapore, has apologised to Malaysia for comments he made about how
Malaysia treats its minority Chinese, Singapore television said on Monday.
Singapore state-owned television Channel NewsAsia (CNA) said Lee -- who still
has a powerful position in the cabinet of his eldest son, Lee Hsien Loong --
had sent a letter to the Malaysian prime minister in which he said he was
"sorry" for the comments.
CNA reported that the letter said Lee "had no intention to meddle in
Malaysian politics, nor does he have the power to influence Malaysian politics, or to
incite the feelings of Chinese in the country".
Malaysian and Indonesia have both protested against Lee's comments made two
weeks ago when he said the two predominantly Muslim neighbouring countries had
"systematically marginalised" their minority Chinese.
