Bodies of two Indonesian Muslims found following clashes with Christians
JAKARTA, Oct. 8 -- The bodies of two Indonesian Muslims killed by a
mob angered at the execution of three Christians have been discovered
in religiously-divided Central Sulawesi, police and residents said Sunday.
Police have arrested 14 people following the discovery of the bodies at
an isolated village on Saturday, in the Poso district, near where the
clashes took place, Deputy Provincial police Chief I Nyoman Sindra said.
The victims were two fresh fish traders from neighbouring South Sulawesi,
who had been missing for several weeks.
They had been stopped at a road blockade set up by people angered by
the government's execution of three Christians, he added.
The Christians were executed on September 22 for inciting violence against
Muslims in 2000.
Eleven people were arrested shortly after the discovery of the two bodies
and taken to the provincial capital Palu for questioning, the police chief
said.
Three more suspects arrived in Poso early on Sunday, journalists at the
provincial police headquarters said.
Unrest in several Christian-dominated areas of Indonesia, the world's
most populous Muslim nation, erupted following the executions.
Clashes between people of the two faiths in 2000 and 2001 claimed
about 1,000 lives.
