Bali anniversary bombing unlikely: expert

Terrorism expert Zachary Abuza says he does not expect Jemaah Islamiah
(JI) to carry out another attack in Indonesia on the upcoming anniversary of
the 2002 Bali bombings.

The attacks on nightclubs in Kuta Beach killed 202 people, including
88 Australians.

Professor Abuza says JI has maintained an almost annual cycle when
carrying out recent bombings, but that does not mean an attack on
October 12 is imminent.

"I don't think they're driven so much by dates. I think they're driven by
when they have the bombs ready to go," he told ABC TV's Lateline
program.

"They do not sit on them waiting for an anniversary.

"Dr Azahari [bin Husin], who was killed last November, was interested
in increasing the tempo of JI's bombings and he was unhappy with that
one bombing a year."

Professor Abuza also says he doubts reports that those responsible for
the London bombings also planned an attack against cricketers during
last year's Ashes series in England.

A British newspaper report claims Al Qaeda members plotted a sarin
gas attack on the Australian and English cricketers.

Professor Abuza says he is sceptical about the reports.

"I don't know of any evidence right now that Al Qaeda's ever had a
sarin gas capability or any access to sarin nerve agents," he said.
