'Seperlunya Tubuh' divulges strength of the body

Intan Ismawati, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

According to local art critic Agus Dermawan, the body is directly linked with
the soul and the brain. If the body feels uncomfortable, this puts tension on
the brain.

Realizing the connection between mind, body and soul, local art school Bilik
3Dharma, in cooperation with ALiLA Hotel Jakarta, is presenting an exhibition
titled Seperlunya Tubuh (Simply Bodies), which features the work of 15
painters and sculptors, both local and international.

According to Agus, Seperlunya Tubuh highlights the role of the body as a
means of thought.

He said the body enabled humans to react appropriately, according to the
instructions given by the brain.

All the works are abstract; therefore, viewers need to analyze them in order
to understand their message, Agus said.

The sculpture titled Dipanggil Mertua (Called by Parents In-Law), by Bibiana,
suggests the body functions like a machine, guided by signals from the brain.

Bibiana has sculpted a man with a serious expression, running as though he
had a tricky problem to solve.

Indra Gunadharma from Bandung uses color to convey her message.

In Ratu Hijau (The Green Queen, 2006), Indra paints a naked woman bathed in
green light, which has transformed her into a green being.

"Drawing the body is the first thing you learn at art school. If you can draw
the body, you can also draw scenery, animals and much more," Indra told The
Jakarta Post.

Agus said the movements of the body reflected emotions and desires.

For instance, viewers might not able to recognize the figure in Aurora
(2005), painted by Wahyuni from Jakarta, but they can easily understand the emotion
that is being conveyed.

In Coming to the End I, II, by Ewie Kusnadi, a man sits in deep sadness,
reflecting on the suffering of natural disaster victims.

"The body reflects human emotion. It is satisfying to paint the body because
you can pour all your feelings into it," Jazz Pasay told the Post.

Pasay is displaying his works, both paintings and sculptures in the
exhibition.

He is convinced the country's art scene is getting stronger.

"Sponsorship by private companies proves that the public is becoming more
receptive to local art," he said.

Work by Ade Artie Tjakara, Indah, Inge Rijanto, Jeannette Bijilmer, Helmut
Huang, Mary Jane Edleson, Oji Dalimunthe, Penny Putman Cramer, Putu Mulyasa and
Ria Saptarini Holloway is also included in the exhibition.

'Antigone' gets Jakarta performance

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The tragedy, Antigone, by French playwright Jean Anouilh will be performed
live on stage by Teater Populer before the general public Saturday evening as
part of the 8th Schouwburg Festival at Gedung Kesenian (GKJ), Central Jakarta.

The production stars award-winning actress Marcella Zalianty.

Antigone by Jean Anouilh bears a strong similarity, with a few new twists, to
the original play with the same name written by Sophocles, an ancient Greek
playwright. Anouilh updated the classic tragedy.

It is the story of young Antigone (daughter of the late King Oedipus). She is
devoted to her brother Polynices, who is killed by her other brother Eteocles
in a power struggle to see who should inherit the throne of Thebes.

This brotherly struggle is a plot devised by acting King Creon (Oedipus'
brother).

The brothers end up killing each other and Creon proclaims one a hero and the
other the villain. The latter is Polynices, whom Creon orders not to be
buried under pain of death.

Antigone defies Creon's decree, is arrested, convicted and ordered to be put
to death.

Antigone is thus a story about a woman's fight against authoritarian power,
according to a synopsis issued by Teater Populer.

The play, directed by Slamet Rahardjo Djarot, will feature actors Ria Probo,
Marcella, Olivia Zalianty, Alex Komang, Heru Susanto and others.

The play was performed Friday before a specially invited audience. For
Saturday's performance tickets will be Rp 40,000 (US$4.30) and Rp 50,000.

The Schouwburg Festival is being held to commemorate the 19th anniversary of
GKJ. It will run through Oct. 5, and features both local and overseas
performers.

On Tuesday, Wayang Orang Satya Budaya Indonesia is scheduled to perform the
traditional work, Rama Sinta.

Puan Maharani, the daughter of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, and
Sri Murniati, the wife of Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and
Security Affairs Widodo Adisucipto, will take part in the play.

Directed by Supono HU, Rama Sinta is the story of the love between Rama and
Sinta. It is often compared to the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Rama rescues Sinta who is kidnapped by Rahwana, an ogre who wants to marry
Sinta.

After being rescued, Sinta is ordered to set herself on fire. However, Sinta
is safe -- evidence of her virginity and true love for Rama.

Tickets for the show are Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000.
