a student of Abu Bakar Bashir who is being questioned in Jakarta about a
separate terrorism investigation.
Head of the investigation, General Made Pastika has stopped short of directly
linking Bashir to the Bali bombings but has described him as a founder in
neighbouring Malaysia of the regional terror network, Jemaah Islamiyah, JI."
"As background to the Bali investigation, General Pastika says Amrozi had
worked in Malaysia and he participated in sermons conducted by Abu Bakar
Bashir."
"General Pastika says much of the money to finance the bomb attack came in
Malaysian currency, but he's played down speculation that an Indonesian called
Hambali, Jemaah Islamiyan's operations chief, has a role in the Bali blast."
Hambali's Australian visit
The Australian government says it has no information about suggestions from
overseas terrorism specialists that a man suspected of ordering the Bali
bombings, has visited Australia.
Zachary Abuza from Simmons College in Boston claims, Hambali, believed to be a
senior al Qaeda commander, has been to Australia.
Mr Abuza says, "I was told by Malaysuan officials that Hambali has visited
Australia on at least one occassion."
Al Qaeda expert, Professor Rohan Gunaratna says it's a warning for the
government: "The very fact he has been to Australia should be taken seriously."
The Federal Attorney General says the government has no information suggesting
Hambali has been to Australia, but, is investigating the possible presence of
terrorist groups or activities.
