projects on community based mental health. 

SC US is in the process of setting up a Community Health Board in Tangse sub-
district, an organised community based function for the improvement of public 
health services in the area. 

Education 
UNICEF provided 10 "School in the Box" to assist damaged and destroyed schools 
after the earthquake in Simeulue Island. 

UNICEF textbooks arrived in Banda Aceh on Wednesday (13 Nov.) and they will be 
distributed to some 79 rebuilt elementary schools throughout the province 
through the Provincial Education Department. 

Livelihood 
CARDI is currently revising proposals of its partners for the livelihood 
project. CARDI travelled to Bireuen from 6 to 8 November and to Central Aceh 
from 10 to 13 November to meet partners and view selected sites targeted for 
the livelihood programme. 

Others 
OCHA supported a workshop carried out by the Provincial Government on "Disaster 
Management" to establish "Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) on Emergency 
Preparedness for Natural Disasters" (fire, earthquake, floods, and IDPs). The 
Vice-Governor of NAD opened the workshop. Some 60 participants from Bakornas 
(National Coordination Board), Satkorlak (Provincial Coordination Board), 
Satlak (District Coordination Board), heads of provincial departments, the UN 
and international agencies took part in the workshop. 

PBI this week is travelling to North Aceh to search for suitable premises to 
open an office in Lhok Seumawe. 

3. CENTRAL SULAWESI 

General Situation 
The police confirmed this week that a public servant was shot dead in Poso on 
Thursday (7 Nov.). There are no reports on increased tension in the area by 
this incident. 

The provincial government confirmed this week that its programmes to support 
IDPs return, resettlement or local empowerment will be extended to July 2003. 
Although more than 11,000 households (about 50,000 persons) have received 
assistances, there are 17,000 more still waiting similar support. 

Local newspapers reported that there is an ongoing fire in the Lore Lindu 
National Park, which reportedly has damaged thousands of hectares of the 
forest. 

Assessments 
A joint ECHO/CARE mission visited Central Sulawesi from 13 to 15 November. The 
mission held a meeting with Provincial and District Authorities, as well as 
OCHA. It also visited IDP-camps and IDPs return areas, where ECHO/CARE's funded 
projects will be implemented. 

Food security 
Mercy Corps has approved two project proposals (from Yayasan Pekurehua and 
Yayasan Tadulako) for the distribution of seeds and tools in Poso District. The 
organisations will distribute seeds and tools to the conflict affected 
communities in the villages of Watumaeta, Maholo, Tamadue,Wanga and Watutau in 
Lore Utara sub-district; Betue and Talabosa, in North Lore sub-district; and 
Rompo and Torire in Central Lore sub-district. Target groups include vulnerable 
families from IDPs or local host community. The project is expected to reach 
about 477 households. Items to be distributed include hoes, sickles and rubber 
boots. 

Health 
IMC operated a mobile clinic in Kalora, Poso Pesisir, on Thursday (14 Nov.).
