SC UK conducted an assessment to identify IDP children in Waai and returnee
sites in Ambon Island so that SC UK can determine their needs to be covered via
its various programmes.
Health
A local newspaper, Ambon Ekspress, reported on Monday (18 Nov.) that the Health
Department of Buru District received Rp 4 billion from the Central Government
for its health budget in the 2002 fiscal year. The Head of Health Department of
Buru District, Salim Alkatiri, stated that the fund would be utilised for the
provision of medical supply and medicine for local Puskesmas.
IMC doctors in Seram and Buru visited a total of 2,083 patients in nine
stations: Wamsisi and Leksula in Buru; Taniwel; Tehoru; Werinama; Wahai; Masohi
mobile clinic and Masohi hospital in Seram; and Srikandi mobile medical boat on
Maluku sea. A health report from Tehoru indicated some patients were treated
for malaria.
MSF health team discovered one case suspected to be measles in THR IDP camp
(local name for the area) in Ambon.
Shelter and Non-food Items
Mercy Corps funded a local NGO (Yayasan Maluku Membangun) to provide basic
housing materials for 9 returnee households in Pakarena village, Kairatu sub-
district, Seram Island.
WFP distributed 4.9 metric tons of rice to a local NGO, Yayasan Lelemuku, as
part of its food for work projects to assist IDPs in building their own
settlements in Paso area, Ambon Island.
Economic Recovery and Infrastructure
On Monday (18 Nov.), Mercy Corps conducted a one-day training on the
development of community management structures for 25 local NGOs in Ambon in
order to enhance the quality of water and sanitation project in the future.
During Ramadhan month, CARDI organises "Batal Bersama" (breaking the fast)
events in IDP camps of Tulehu, Hila and Pohon Manga on Ambon Island. The most
recent event was conducted on Friday (22 Nov.) in Pohon Manga.
5. NORTH MALUKU
General Situation
On Thursday (21 Nov.), the acting Governor, S.H. Sarundajang confirmed that he
would hand over his function to the newly elected Governor, Thaib Armayan on
Monday (25 Nov.). A ministerial delegation from Jakarta is expected to arrive
in Ternate on Sunday (24 Nov.) to officially install the new Governor.
Population Movements
Forty families from Mega Belia Camp in Bitung, North Sulawesi returned to Bacan
and Obi sub-districts on Wednesday (20 Nov.). The return process was
coordinated by the Social Department of Manado.
