North Sumatra to conduct a rapid assessment on living conditions of IDP from
Aceh in North Sumatra. The mission visited IDPs sites in Harapan Jaya and
Piturah Villages, Sei Lepan sub-district and Air Hitam Village, Stabat sub-
district.
Population movement
WHO reported from the Crisis Centre (CC) at the Provincial Health Department
(PHD) that as of Monday (30 June), 8,737 families (a total of 38,664 people
including 1,258 infants, 5,049 children between 1 to 5 of age, 367 pregnant
women and 1,113 elderly people) are displaced as IDPs in Aceh Jaya, West Aceh,
South Aceh, South West Aceh, Aceh Tamiang, Pidie, East Aceh, North Aceh, Bireun
and Aceh Tenggara districts.
Seven thousand people from 5 villages in Nisam sub-district fled their homes to
Alue Papeun village of North Aceh on Monday (30 June) to seek refuge as
fighting intensified in the sub-district. Two IDPs, a three year old baby and a
lactating mother, died in the camp.
Five hundred people from Sungai Mas sub-district of West Aceh district left
their villages on Monday (30 June) to join some 1,200 IDPs sheltering in an
abandoned housing complex set up by the Government in Alue Peunyareng village,
Meureubo sub-district of West Aceh.
Health
Health officials reported on Sunday (29 June) that 679 IDPs have been treated
for various diseases including skin disorders, diarrhoea and respiratory cases
in Alue Peunyareng village, Meureubo sub-district of West Aceh.
A local newspaper, Waspada, reported on Tuesday (1 July) that the Health Crisis
Centre officials informed that 124 persons out of 1,455 IDPs in Bendahara and
Seruway sub-districts of Aceh Tamiang district are suffering from depression
symptoms. Another 541 are suffering from scabies.
Water and Sanitation
A local newspaper, Serambi Indonesia, reported on Tuesday (1 July) that 188
displaced families (750 people) in Reuluet Camp, Muara Dua sub-district of
North Aceh are suffering from lack of clean water supply since their
displacement on 18 June.
Education
UNICEF received information from the Provincial Education Department that from
19 May to 3 July, 529 schools had been burnt in Aceh province.
Military officials reported on Monday (30 June) that TNI and the police with
the help of local communities were restoring 92 out of more than 500 burned
schools in Aceh.
Officials from the District Education Department reported on Thursday (3 July)
that GAM torched five schools in Blang Mangat sub-district of North Aceh
district on Wednesday (2 July) destroying most of the schools' learning
facilities and student documents.
3. CENTRAL SULAWESI
General Situation
A local newspaper, Radar Sulteng, reported on Monday (30 June) that Palu
District Court sentenced Farihin alias Ibnu on Saturday (28 June) to 2.6 years
in prison for illegally possessing 2,575 ammunition pieces and 12,943
incendiary devices. While in the same day, Poso District Court sentenced
Bharatu Zukeus Juan alias Jack, a Mobile Brigade Police officer from East
Kalimantan to 1.6 years in prison for shooting a bus passenger in Kayamanya of
Poso Kota sub-district.
Radar Sulteng reported on Saturday (28 June) that Provincial Police is hunting
38 people who are all allegedly involved in various cases of mysterious
shootings, burning and other criminal activities in Poso. On Friday (27 June)
the Provincial Police arrested Pian, one of the 38 suspects, in a hotel in
Palu. Pian was allegedly involved in the murder of Anak Agung Ketut Pujawan, a
Malakosa resident of Parigi Mouting, and John Dulang in Poso Pesisir.
A local tabloid, Poso Post, reported in its 23 June - 10 July edition, that
there were 575 families (2,300 people) of Poso IDPs in North Sulawesi and they
had never received assistance from the North Sulawesi Social Affairs
Department.
Food Security and Agriculture
Under its Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition (SAN) programme, CARE is
conducting a survey on data of poor families and children under five in Poso
Pesisir, Poso Kota Lage, Tojo and West Tojo sub-districts of Poso district.
Health
On Wednesday (2 July), IMC conducted an Information, Education and
Communication (IEC) campaign focusing on Safe Motherhood through a local radio
station in Poso Kota sub-district, Bhayangkara.
IMC conducted an IEC campaign focusing on Immunization and Safe Motherhood
during Posyandu activity on Thursday (3 July) in Kasintuwu of Poso Kota sub-
district. Twenty three children under five and 3 pregnant women participated in
the campaign.
Education
On Wednesday and Tuesday (30 June and 2 July), Mercy Corps received proposals
on school support programme from LNGOs (Harapan Kita, Yayasan Sejati and
Yayasan Putra Bangsa).
Water and Sanitation
On 27 July, Mercy Corps conducted pre-monitoring on progress of construction of
water facility in Pantangolemba of Poso Pesisir sub-district. The project is
implemented by its local partner, YPM-GKST.
On Monday (30 June), Mercy Corps received a proposal on Water and Sanitation
Hygiene (WaSH) programme in Malei of Lage sub-district from an LNGO, Yayasan
Wasantara.
On Tuesday (1 July), Mercy Corps commenced its three-day WaSH training at
Unsimar University in Poso Kota sub-district. Forty participants from 17 LNGOs
participated in the training.
